Puppies like to play with people and often bite, chew and mouth on people's hands, limbs, and clothing. For puppies that are several months old, it looks cute. But for more than three months old puppies, it's not so endearing. And how to prevent the puppy from biting?
Prevent the pounce.
If your puppy is pouncing on your legs or feet as you walk, a common playful puppy behavior, Santo recommends holding a high-value treat next to your leg as you walk, to help the puppy learn to walk nicely alongside you. This same tactic is used when teaching a puppy to walk on a no pull dog harness and leash.
Teach your puppy bite inhibition.
Learning how to moderate the force of a bite is very important for all dogs. There may come a time when they’re in pain or fearful, and they put their mouth on you or someone else. But if they’ve learned bite inhibition, they understand that they shouldn’t bite down hard. Puppies naturally nip at each other while playing. If they bite too hard on their mother or littermate, the other dog will likely make a loud yelp sound, warning the puppy, “Hey, that hurt!”
Depending on the dog, you can teach this, as well, by making a high-pitched “ow!” sound if they bite you. Beware though, because, for some puppies, this actually gets them even more worked up and likely to bite. In this case, it is better to turn quietly around, walk away, or gently put the pup into their crate for a few minutes to calm down. If they do back off, be sure to reward your dog with a treat and some verbal praise.
Praise them
When your pup plays well with you, remember to praise them. This will ensure they’re encouraged to play in a manner where everyone has fun.
Toys, toys and more toys
It’s fine to play energetically with your dog and for your puppy to use their teeth, but this type of play should be directed on to appropriate play objects. It’s best to play with your puppy in a manner that’s less likely to hurt, right from the beginning. Have a variety of strong and sturdy toys like a dog chew toys on hand when you start a play session. When your pup goes to use their teeth, push a toy into their mouth.
Redirect
To teach your puppy that his mouth on human skin is not okay at all, use redirection. When the puppy tries to mouth you, pull your hand away before contact, then provide a treat or wave around a chewy toy until he bites that.
You can also satisfy your puppy's urge to mouth things with non-contact games, such as fetch or tug-of-war. However, remember to never let the tugging become too aggressive, and teach your puppy a "let go" or "leave it" command so you can always remove something from his mouth without an aggressive response.
